Just for fun, while laying in bed last night I did an audit on the new Reddit gold system, and what I found will probably not shock you, considering the fact that the new system really sucks, and it doesn’t allow you to maintain your anonymity, which is pretty much a Reddit must, and they charge $1.99 for just the basic up vote gold arrow, which is absolutely insane in my opinion, but then to make it all so much worse… it’s a new transaction every single time you gift a gold arrow!
Anyway, I went to a few of the sub-Reddits I subscribe to and discovered that my beloved Wall Street Bets is actually in the gold program already, via the telephone application only for now, as is a couple of the other big sub-Reddits I enjoy frequenting.
So, to see how many people are actually being gifted gold in this new system, I toggled the selector to “Top”, and set the search parameters to “Past Month”, and I believe it’s already been a month since the new Reddit gold system has dropped, so this should be good to go.
What I found was so sad, because only “2” posts on the top posts for the past month have been gifted gold, and one of them had over 8,000 up votes, and they both just had one base gold up arrow gifted each, so a whopping $3.99 was gifted to other Redditors within the past month… how sad is that?
Now, compare this to the old Reddit Coins combined with the old Reddit Awards system, which was so much fun by the way, and there is just no way that this is a more lucrative system for Reddit going forward.
Fun fact, I remember when the Wall Street Bets sub-Reddit used to be covered in so many awesome and creative awards… those were the days!
I know Reddit is trying to go public and all, but how is this going to help their stock price when they do?
Plus, I know they have their little contributor program now too, but how is anyone ever going to be accepted in it, if no respectable Redditor worth their salt is going to use this crap?
